01 / ABOUT THE PLACE
Drawn in by the smoky aroma of grilling eel, passersby will find an accessible introduction to unagi at Unatoto Akihabara, an ingredient often reserved for formal dining. Diners buy meal tickets at an automated machine right at the entrance, making it easy to drop in for a quick lunch or dinner between stops in the neighborhood.
Rice bowls form the backbone of the selection, led by an affordable entry-level unadon. For a more substantial portion, the flagship unadon double comes loaded with 2 cuts of eel. Basted in a sweet and savory glaze and grilled over charcoal until tender, the eel pairs effortlessly with the hot steamed rice beneath. Diners seeking a more leisurely meal can opt for unaju or unaju tokujo served in traditional rectangular boxes, or hitsumabushi, featuring finely chopped eel tossed over rice.
A variety of soups and side dishes are available to round out each order. A bowl of red-miso soup or a clear liver broth provides a balanced counterpart to the richness of the kabayaki. For smaller bites alongside a draft or bottled beer, the kitchen also turns out umaki—tender eel rolled in a dashi-seasoned omelet—and grilled liver skewers.
Counter seats line the interior, offering a comfortable layout for solo diners. Because core eel dishes and soups can also be packed to take away, the counter serves just as well for an easy takeout dinner after exploring Akihabara.
